The Balanced Line Single Wing Offense for Youth Football

By Dave Cisar

Most youth football teams that run the Single Wing Offense run it out of the traditional unbalanced line set.

Many coaches have asked me about using the Balanced Line Single Wing Offense in youth football. For most coaches, they ask because they have “Special Rules” in their Youth Football Leagues that require them to use balanced line formations. From 2-3% of youth football leagues have rules like this.

It is very simple to modify the Unbalanced Line Single Wing Offense to a balanced line set. While most High Schools that run the Single Wing Offense do stick to the unbalanced set, a number of them do have a balanced line set or two as well.

Menominee Michigan High School runs nearly its entire Single Wing Offense out of a balanced line set. Menominee won yet another State Title last year as well as blew out the Defending Largest Class State Champion (Wayzata- 3,400 students) of Minnesota. Menominee as most of you know, has just 550 students. It’s hard to argue with Menominee head coach Ken Hofer, who has over 250 wins running this offense from a balanced line set. Hofer is a legend in Single Wing circles and is an excellent clinic speaker.

Some modifications required if you run the Single Wing Offense from a Balanced Line Set:

The midpoint of the offensive line is the center, you now wedge on the center. Pull the Left Guard on off-tackle runs to the right. Pull just the Right Guard (not the power tackle also) on reverse runs to the left. The Left Tackle Blocks GD, Gap-Down on traps to the left.

As you can see, moving to the balanced line is no big deal if you are required to do so. If I was forced to run this offense, those would be the changes I would make. I would make my power tackle the left guard, as he would be my second most athletic lineman.

We must all play by whatever rules the leagues think makes sense, no matter how silly they may be. Don’t dwell or whine about it, just make the adjustments and make it work.

Is a balanced line immune with interference?
Question:
People say twin lead is a balanced line yet they say it's also prone with interference, I don't get it! While people say coaxial is shielded yet I see lots of interference in VHF band (especially ch.2-10), I don't get it!

Answer:
The whole problem is that you don't understand what a balanced line is. There are two ways to transmit a signal: one wire and two wire. The voltage of the signal on the line must be compared to something to be read, so in a single wire you compare their line voltage to your ground. In a differential pair one is reference, and the other is signal, so they are giving you both the signal and something to compare it to. Obviously a differential pair has a much greater noise immunity, but learn this rule of communications: nothing is immune to noise. A ground covering your coax helps, but (insert rule here).

Is the 1/8" line-out on the back of my pc balanced or unbalanced?
Question:
I just purchased a handheld digital recorder, which has a 1/4" trs balanced line-in. I did not purchase the recorder to record from my pc, but I may in the future. Is the audio 1/8" trs line-out on the back of my pc balanced or unbalanced? Thanks

Answer:
unbalanced. All home level audio equipment uses unbalanced (i.e. RCA type connectors) audio unless specifically stated otherwise. Balanced equipment can accept unbalanced inputs with no problem, you just need the correct cable, and you do lose the noise reduction of true balanced inputs.

Will a "Balanced Line TRS" cable work for my Stratocaster Guitar?
Question:
Will a "Balanced Line TRS" cable work for my Stratocaster Guitar?

Answer:
your guitar does NOT have a "balanced out", so it all depends on what you want? the cable "might" work, but it will NOT be a "balanced" signal....!!!! if it works, it will NOT be any better than any high quality guitar cable. The Fender Strat has Hi Impedance pickups, (unless you changed them) Only Lo Imp pickups, can be "balanced" . (unless you put a transformer inline) what are you trying to accomplish with it? do NOT go over 20 feet of cable, you WILL start to lose signal, highs, etc, if you do. Buy the BEST quality cable you can, it doesn't make sense, to have a good guitar, and try to save $5-10 on a cheap cable.

Do you support a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget? Line item veto?
Question:
How much longer can we keep spending money we don't have?

Answer:
Clinton had the line-item veto for a short while. It was ruled unconstitutional. You would have to figure out a way to design it to pass constitutional muster. The last two presidents to preside over a balanced budget were Democrats -- LBJ and Clinton. We first have to get the country back into decent economic shape, after the excesses and neglect of the Republicans, before we can get back to balanced budgets. It takes a while. Edit: Note that a Republican mayor, Rudi Giuliani, brought the lawsuit that successfully defeated the line-item veto. Also note that Clinton used the same accounting methods that Bush used. While Clinton had budget surpluses and even started to pay down the national debt, Bush had record-setting deficits. The Republican mania for cutting taxes for the wealthy displays their lack of appreciation of the actual common sense issues involved in governing a large, complex, modern-day society. The simplistic catch phrases and outdated ideologies no longer apply.

Fox News Fair and Balanced - Do conservatives repeating that tag line incessantly really believe it?
Question:
Do they think Pepsi really is the choice of a new Generation, and that they will be in good hands with AllState. Do they think Disney is the happiest place on earth and that McDonald's loves to see them smile? Shouldn't we automatically mistrust any news organization that continually informs its audience that they are fair and balanced and should be trusted like its a mantra to lull them into acceptance?

Answer:
We find Fox New to be Fair and Balanced regardless of their slogan. Do you ever consider that the other networks do not even pretent to be fair and balanced? Do you suppose that is why people do not watch them in the same numbers as they do Fox? “We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission: which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force”. -Ayn Rand *

Recording through an RCA out or balanced line out (aux)?
Question:
I am using a Mackie mixer (i'm not sure of the model number). I'm wondering will you get a better result if you record using the RCA outs or a balanced line out (1/4") Those are my only two options for this particular project. I am recording to a plain old laptop Mackie mixers do have balanced outs on the back and i cant run an XLR cable to my laptop

Answer:
Actually some equipment does use 1/4 inch TRS phone plugs & jacks for balanced inputs and outputs. I have a pair of Mackie 824 studio monitors that have these among other inputs. However, if you are going into a PC line input, they are almost always unbalanced, so there is nothing to gain using the balanced outputs from the mixer. If you are serious about high quality recording, think about a professional grade sound interface like the Creative EMU1820. It does have balanced mic (XLR) and line level (1/4" TRS) inputs .

What is a balanced line out?
Question:
I have an Ampeg BA115HPT, and i was curious if there was any way i could attach another cabinet to it. it has an input called "balanced line out", but I don't know what it does; would it be plugged into the other cabinet? Thanks guys Well i have an Ampeg BA115HPT http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ampeg-BA115HPT-1X15--220- Watt-Bass-Combo-Amp-481723-i1145697.gc and i want to hook it up to the cabinet version: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ampeg-B115E-1X15--Speaker -Cabinet-603089-i1153168.gc

Answer:
Balanced is simply a 3 pin connection, usually an XLR type but I've seen TRS used as well. I suggest going over the manual to see what you can hook into that output. Sometimes it is only used for recordings, other times it can be wired to a cab but you need to know the ratings so you can pick the right cab so you don't blow up the amp...or speaker...

Do you think the US budget could be balanced if the president could use line item vetoes?
Question:
Or would it just cause problems with the Senate and Congress when pet spending projects are cancelled

Answer:
Probably both, assuming the president cares about that sort of thing.

A 50Hz 400V balanced system has a line current of 26A and the power dissipated is 9360W determinethepowerfacto?

Answer:
From the Total Power Formula for balanced 3ph loads. Total Power = SqRt3 * Vline * I line * PF PF = Total Power / (SqRt3 * Vline * Iline) = 9360w / (SqRt3 * 400V * 26 A) = 0.519 Answer

I need an 8 line poem about chemical equations and the last line must be a balanced equation?
Question:
This is for a CHILD!! PLEASE HELP US!!!

Answer:
Here is a start, but you have to add more lines:- Little Johnny went to school, He'll go to school no more, For what he thought was H2O, Was H2SO4. Another Chemistry poem, but you need to change the last line:- Little Willie from his mirror, Licked the mercury right off, Thinking in his childish error, It would cure the whooping cough. At his funeral his mother, Brightly said to Mrs Brown, 'Twas a chilly day for Willie When the mercury went down!
