No Leis for Brady, Moss - Pats Starters Join Other Top Stars Opting Out of Pro Bowl

By A.f. Cook

Just as I was wondering how Tom Brady was going to get himself mentally prepared to play in the Pro Bowl next week, my question was answered before it was even asked: Brady isn't going and neither, it turns out, is Randy Moss.

I can't blame them, although I'm sure the sports pundits will bat their absences around, trying to insinuate that Brady and Moss have caught the "sore losers" virus.

The fact is that athletes, despite their outward bravado, are emotional creatures. While Brady and Moss may have physical situations that prevent them from playing, I have little doubt the emotional shock of losing the Super Bowl - and of the team performing as badly as it did - has taken its toll.

I had tons of sympathy for Terrell Owens after the Giants beat Dallas in the playoffs. While some of the usual sports suspects denigrated T.O.'s tears for his team, I thought it was a genuine show of emotion that anyone who is an athlete or lives with one understands and respects.

I also thought it was convenient and rather vulgar when some people tried to accuse San Diego Chargers running back Ladainian Tomlinson of "not showing up" for his teammates because he came out of the Chargers' playoff game against New England early with a persistent knee injury. L.T. seemed to be hiding behind his tinted helmet visor, but I knew what we were witnessing was an athlete hurting inside and out at his inability to perform. Shame on the sports pundits - even former athletes - for disrespecting L.T.'s quiet, and quite obvious, show of emotion.

So I say back off, press. Give Brady and Moss their due. They gave NFL aficionados a heck of a show, they just lost a huge game, and they deserve some space. If you want to even get an inkling of what they're going through, talk to former Buffalo Bills QB Jim Kelly, or Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino. Those guys never even won rings - and the way they didn't win them was, I can guarantee you, hugely disappointing for both men.

The disappointment of athletic achievement falling just short of the mark is the great risk athletes face every day. That risk is magnified at the professional level. What we owe the men and women who are willing and able to compete on that level is deep respect.

Brady is being replaced by Cleveland Browns' QB Derek Andersen and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson will join his teammate, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, in place of Moss.

But the two Patriots stars are not alone. Tomlison and Chargers tight end Antonio Gates are also sitting out the Pro Bowl. So is their teammate on the defensive side of the ball, Jamal Williams.

With so many stars out of the Pro Bowl this year, it will probably be hard for NFL promoters to whip up as much enthusiasm as expected. Like a lot of my fellow fans, I'm spent from all the pre-Super Bowl hype, anyway. Maybe after the raising and tearing down of NFL demi-gods during the season, we're ready to enjoy a match of also-rans.

Randy Moss?
Question:
I've noticed alot of Moss bashing, yeah he disappeared, yeah he quits on plays... But plain and simple, as a vikings fan from north dakota.. He gave us so many great replays, made back to back tds, caught 80, 90 yard passes, literally wille dour vikings to win week in and out. I still like Randy Moss, and thank him on behalf of the entire state of minnesota. He gave us some highlights, and remarkable plays, personally i've never seen a wide-out in my life time EVER make so many phenominal plays. not to mention if moss was in the game, we had a shot to win ANY game. Moss mooned Greenbay, god bless him!! Minnesota still loves you RANDY MOSS!!

Answer:
All Randy needed was a qb that could get him the ball... in oakland he didnt have that... but now that he is in new england he will i repeat he will come up big this year! did u notice the camp time randy turned in the 40?(4.27 wow!!!) randy is a great reciever that i like but people need to get off his back and worry about terell owens not performing... cause randy's gonna get his shine on this year....

randy moss?
Question:
will randy moss still be a good team mate if they lose

Answer:

Randy moss?
Question:
anyone else like to see randy go for 183 yards and a td like i do i hope he stays consistant

Answer:
Oh I Love it! I told everyone Moss was the best and for the first time in awhile I got something to show for it. He will stay consistant all year. The only reason he didn't have INSANE numbers in Oakland was because he didn't have a good QB or O-line. Now with Brady and the Pats, The SUPER FREAK is back!!!

What did Randy Moss say in the offensive player intros at the start of the Chargers game?
Question:
I thought he said, "Randy Moss, Grand University." But I backed up and put on the closed captions and it read: "Randy Moss, Brant University." What's the deal? He went to Marshall right? I did another rewind. He does say Grand University, although the captions did read Brant University. I think that was from Dante Stallworth saying Brant High School, even though he went to Tennessee.

Answer:
LOL.....I think he was trying to be a smart ass..because to me it sounded like "Randy Moss...Brand University"...but i just re winded it on my DVR and he said "Randy Moss...*pause* Rand University"....such a nut. But then I did it with the captions and it said "Brant University". From what I've heard from my dad said sometimes they (the players) give "shout-outs" to people and their schools...so maybe that was it.

I heard Randy Moss' accuser got tickets to the playoff game at both sides of the endzone?
Question:
President of the Chargers purchased the tickets at an astonishing $10,000 each. Since Randy Moss has a restraining court order of 500 feet, this would prevent Moss from getting close to the end zone. The best strategy I've heard so far.

Answer:
dont think so!..I think you just made that one up all by yourself..

How do you think Randy Moss will do next year with the Patriots?
Question:
He got a 3 year, $27 million doller contract, if he continues to be the "'07 Randy" will probably see almost every penny of that. The question is, will he? Now that he's gotten paid and returned to his rightful place as the best receiver in football with the records to prove it, will Moss continue to be the Good Patriot? Who will he be now?

Answer:
he should. he has got to be bitter over the super bowl.

Where does Randy Moss rank as an all time football player?
Question:
Let's say we were putting together a list of the 100 greatest football players of all time. Where would you rank Randy Moss?

Answer:
He wouldn't make the list

What do you think of Revis calling Randy Moss and TO out?
Question:
Revis with an interview with Deion Sanders said that Randy Moss and TO are slouches. He said Chad, Steve Smith, and Andre Johnson are competitors. He shut them all down. What do you think of him calling these players out? You think Rex Ryan have something to do with this? He is a modest type guy who is running the mouth a little. Is there any truth about Randy Moss and TO? You think he will shut Vincent Jackson down?

Answer:
It's no secret that Randy Moss and T.O. only play hard when they want to...and Chad, Smith and Johnson give their 1000% in every down. No need to open his mouth like that.

Should I start Randy Moss this week on Fantasy Football?
Question:
Randy Moss is questionable this week and I am not sure if he will play or be productive. I could replace him with Wes Welker but, Welker is also questionable but i have him sitting on the bench since he didn't play last week. I also have Kevin Curtis except he is doubtful so i don't think i should play him either. What would you do in my situation? King of Naught, i liked your idea but guess what? Julian Edelman is also questionable and only predicted 3 points. Does New England have any "decent" receivers other than Moss, Welker, Edelman?

Answer:
Wow...well for one I would try to grab Edelman off of free agency. The guy subeed in for Welker and fit nicely in the slot, although he isn't as good as Welker. I would say that Welker doesn't5 play and Moss does but it's tough with the Patriots. Grab some depth at WR from the free agent market and then watch the injury reports until the last second. If Moss plays you have to go with him

Can Randy Moss who currently has 139 career touchdowns can break Jerry Rice's record of 197?
Question:
Keep in mind that Randy Moss has played 12 seasons in the NFL; however, Jerry Rice played 20 seasons in the nfl before retiring. So do you think he can get 59 more before he retires? Please be realistic and use reasonable arguments.

Answer:
Its gonna be hard but if anyone can do its him with Brady by his side. Looks like TO is done!!!
